A few weeks ago, Lauren asked for June 18th off to do “one of the most Portlandy things ever.’” My response was, “Oh, the naked bike ride?” She replied, “No! I’m going to see Moshow, the Cat Rapper, at Purrington’s!” I hadn’t heard of Moshow, so she quickly informed me about him, his four cats, and that he raps about cats. And only cats. Sounded like Portland to me!
Here is Lauren’s full report on Moshow’s first-ever “Cat Powers” show at Purrington’s, Portland’s only Cat Lounge:
Several months ago, while searching for blog topics on the Willamette Week website, I stumbled across an article on “Portland’s Feminist Cat Rapper: Moshow.” I know it’s not real estate, but how could I not click the link for more details?
Since that time, I’ve followed Moshow online through his videos and social media posts. It was not only because I am a cat lover (all animals, really), but because Moshow’s message is not really about cats—it’s about dreams, perseverance, and acceptance of our differences as human beings. I’ve recruited more than a few friends to join Moshow’s “Cat Family,” and thankfully, our Windermere office-mate and fellow cat lover, Meredith, joined me at the show.
I forewarned Meredith that I’d be breaking out my “Stop Stressing Meowt” t-shirt, kitty head socks, kitty tote bag and some leopard print sunglasses for the event. And at the last moment, a former co-worker gifted me a Hello Kitty necklace to complete the ensemble. Meredith still agreed to go with me (what a great friend)!
The concert couldn’t have been more “purrfect.” The adoptable kitties were roaming throughout Purrington’s, and a sold out crowd from all walks of life gathered to support Moshow. His performance was filled talent, humility and gratitude. You could feel the love in the room. Love for cats. Love for humankind. Love for a young man doing something so incredibly quirky (and meaningful) that it could only happen in the eclectic, eccentric city we all love: Portland.
